First in my heart

I woke up this morning a little late. Who am I kidding though, that is pretty much the norm. I got one of those really-good-news phone calls. I got this job for when I graduate my Masters of Social Work program in May. A job I will love. This, among other things, led to me being newly struck again by the immeasurable blessings in my life. And the goodness of God.
Do you have a song that you play when your heart is wanting to express as much adoration to God as possible, but you feel like your own words simply can’t get there? In times such as this, I play “Be Thou My Vision”. Not just any version. Ginny Owens. I like the simplicity of it. It’s just her smooth, breathy, clear voice. No special effects. It’s striking. It centers me. And it’s historical between me & God. I mean, this one goes back to some of my middle school prayer times. And I just sit there, by myself, in silence, letting the words and melody of the song be my deepest prayer to God.
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heav’ns Son!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O ruler of all.
